The artist was born in Austria and trained in Vienna as a watercolourist. He was a protégé of the comte de Schomburg, with whom he sailed to South America, England and accompanied him around Switzerland and Northern Italy. The artist settled in Paris around 1830 and was naturalised as a French citizen in 1870. He was an accomplished landscape painter and gave Joséphine Bowes painting lessons for a number of years. This painting is bathed in sunlight, drawing the viewer’s eye to the water as it cascades over the waterfall crashing down onto the rocks below. The scale of the landscape is breathtaking and Kuwasseg’s use of light and shade adds drama to the composition. A strong shadow is cast across the foreground of the painting that engulfs the two figures sitting on the edge of the ledge as they look out across the fall.
