John Bunyan was born in Elstow, Bedfordshire and drew inspiration from the Bedfordshire countryside for Christian's journey in 'Pilgrim's Progress'. Many of the sites were first described by A. J. Foster in his book 'Bunyan's Country' (1901). Edward Callam followed the trail of this book, recording the landscape in the 1960s and early 1970s. The catalogue for the exhibition in which they first appeared has quotations from 'Pilgrim's Progress' - 'Then said the Interpreter Come in: I will show thee that which will be profitable to thee...then which when he had done, Christian saw the picture of a very grave person...the best of books in his hand...as if he pleaded with men'. This painting is captioned, a portrait of John Bunyan.
