This piece is a study for a larger painting of the same title which is in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery on Merseyside and was first exhibited in 1897. Boulter’s Lock is on the River Thames near Maidenhead. During Victorian times, Boulter's Lock won fame and notoriety across the country as thousands of people flocked to the river there on summer weekends to mess about in boats and watch the wealthier classes indulge themselves. So popular was it that in 1899 an iron railing was erected round the lock to keep spectators at bay.
