A light-hearted view of tourism, Yates has placed little character studies on a vivid beach.

Yates was born in Manchester in 1922. In 1946 he entered art college, where he remained until 1951. In his penultimate year at college, he received a scholarship to Rome and Florence. Then in 1951 he won first prize in a national competition on the theme of British Industry. In 1954 he won another prize in an open competition on the subject of football. He began teaching art in 1952 and continued to do so for 17 years until he took up painting full-time.
