This portrait of a gentleman warmly wrapped in furs closely resembles a portrait of a ‘Seated Man’ in the National Gallery, formerly attributed to Rembrandt.

Rembrandt’s style and work have been much admired and copied from his own time onwards, and many paintings once attributed to him are now considered copies, or works by artists following his style. This painting is in Rembrandt’s style, and may be a copy of the National Gallery painting, or another similar work.

It, and another portrait following Rembrandt, have similar frames and have hung at Brodsworth as a pair, certainly since an inventory was taken in 1885.
