A Roof for the Middle Class' (2012) forms part of Theaster Gates' ongoing series of tar paintings which he began in 2011. Personal and political themes are explored in Gates' earlier tar works such as this one, where roofing paper, tar and an issue of 'Ebony' magazine from 1973 are collaged together to create a monochromatic, textural composition. With its thick impasto and shiny reflective surface, the tar visibly shows the movement of the hand across the canvas, linking this work to Japanese calligraphy as well as to a history of gestural abstraction. In using everyday materials associated with construction – particularly the safety, security and stability of home dwellings – Gates elevates the value of these materials whilst at the same time opening them up to creative experimentation.
