Second painting in the series entitled 'The Progress of Human Knowledge and Culture' by James Barry. Following Orpheus bringing culture to the Greeks, this painting shows them joyfully reaping the benefits. Top left, a zodiac showing Leo, Virgo and Libra, places the scene at the end of the harvest period, and the Classical gods Ceres, Bacchus and Pan watch over the season's festivities. In the background, underneath the gods, are loaded carts and a threshing-floor, while the foreground shows fruits and farming tools, as well as men and women dancing around a double statue of the Roman and Greek gods of woods and fields, Sylvanus and Pan.
