Elizabeth Adela Stanhope Forbes was a great exponent of painting 'en plein air'. She had a mobile studio built so that she could even produce her elaborate medieval compositions in that way. The youth in the painting is Richard John Boase Richards, the miller at Drift Mills and a farmer. He died of typhoid and is buried in Sancreed churchyard with a granite millstone as his headstone.
