In the mid-nineteenth century, this painting was attributed to Zurbarán and then to Velázquez: it is a portrait of a plebeian dog, rather than the more common type of image of hunting dogs or courtly lapdogs. The artist may have been Genoese and an attribution been suggested to Giovanni Agostino Cassana (b. after 1659–1720).
