This painting is a typical subject for van der Meulen, a procession of Louis XVI, and is similar to one in Dresden entitled 'Ausfahrt der Konig Ludwig nach Vincennes'. The King himself is clearly identifiable, seated in his carriage. He is the only passenger wearing a hat while on either side his attendants face outwards toward the crowd.

The bright colour palette and hilly landscape with a swung path create a vibrant sense of movement. The rich and warm red and gold of the people with their luxurious clothes is balanced by the cool natural tones of the green landscape and blue air.
