A happy young boy with a feather in his cap is depicted playing a fiddle. Yet the jolly tone is contradicted by the skull set on the table, which suggests that the musical subject refers to the transience of life, a frequent theme in Dutch seventeenth-century painting. This painting has been accepted by some experts as the work of Judith Leyster, who may have worked with Frans Hals in her early career. Leyster often depicted small, intimate genre scenes, sometimes with a music theme. The donor, Alfred de Pass (1861–1952), was a Cape Town-born businessman and philanthropist.
