Artist in oil, watercolour and mixed media, born in Ayrshire, related to the artists James Herald and Dorothy Johnstone. Walker studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1959–64, under Mary Armour and David Donaldson. She admired the work of Francis Cadell, whose verve and colour were influences on her own still lifes, landscapes and interiors, with their angularity and strong tonal contrasts. She was a regular exhibitor at RSW, RSA, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and SSWA. Awards included Anne Redpath Award at SSWA, 1982; Glasgow Herald Painting Competition, at Royal Glasgow Institute, 1986; in 1995 Whyte & Mackay Group Award and Alva Computers Purchase Prize, both at SSWA; Scottish Provident Award, SSWA, 1997; Most Well-Received Work, SSWA, 1998; Barclay Lennie Award, Glasgow Society of Women Artists, 2000; and Mabel McKinlay Award, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, 2002.
