Creator of artworks, sculptures and designs, born in Hillingdon, Middlesex. He gained an honours degree in fine art, sculpture, at University of Reading, 1981–5, then worked at odd jobs towards becoming a professional sculptor. In 1985 began collaborating with Nicholas Treadwell Gallery which led to exhibitions at major art fairs worldwide. Other shows included: 1986, Fresh Art, Barbican Centre; from 1990, Marcus & Marcus Gallery, Amsterdam, also Arts Week and Himley Sculpture Trail, Dudley. Workshops included: producing a junk orchestra with borough artist Steve Field, at Wordsley Youth Centre, Dudley, 1990; and scrap plastic robot workshop with sculptor Claire Carter, Dudley Art Week, 1991. Tolkien’s commissions included: 1983, pen and ink drawings for Wethered’s Brewery, Marlow; 1984, mural for Arthur Hill Swimming Pool, Reading; 1991, Box Office Bertie, mobile kiosk for Alhambra Studio Theatre, Bradford; and 1992, 20-foot sculpture for Equinox Night Club, Leicester Square, for First Leisure.
