Artist in oil, watercolour, ink and chalk, and teacher, born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He studied at Cheltenham School of Art with Gerald Gardiner, 1940–3, then at Royal College of Art with Ruskin Spear and Carel Weight, 1947–50. Smith lectured at Wallasey College of Art, 1950–82. He was a member of Wirral Society of Arts and for a time of Liverpool Academy and the Cheltenham Group. He had a retrospective at Williamson Art Gallery, 1974, another at Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, 1996. That was of drawings of Cheltenham, 1942–65, a valuable record of vanished and changed buildings. Both the Williamson and Cheltenham hold Smith’s work. Lived at Neston, South Wirral, Cheshire.
