Irish-born abstract painter who became an American citizen in 1983. He was born in Dublin and after an apprenticeship as a commercial engraver he studied at Croydon College of Art and then (1968–71) at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where he subsequently taught (1971–3). In 1973 he moved to New York. His work is uncompromisingly abstract, typically featuring dense, richly coloured latticeworks of stripes. He considers abstraction ‘a non-denominational religious art. I think it's the spiritual art of our time.’ In 2007 he published Walls of Aran, a book of photographs.
