Landscape painter, chiefly in oil, with a special interest in North of England scenes. Born in Stalybridge, Lancashire, he studied art at Sheffield School of Art under Oliver Senior. Exhibited widely, including RA, RI, RSA, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Paris Salon, where he won silver and gold medals, at the New York World’s Fair and widely in Canada. Royle was director of the school of fine arts at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, 1934–45. His work is held in many British provincial collections, including Sheffield, Derby, Rotherham and Bristol, and widely throughout Canada. Lived at Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
