Architect and architectural watercolourist, born in London. He attended London University, studying architecture at Birkbeck College and abroad, eventually becoming professor of architecture at University College, 1919–46, and at the Royal Academy Schools from 1947. Was made a fellow of the RIBA, was an RIBA gold medallist, was president of the RA, 1954–6, being knighted in 1956. Exhibited RA and wrote several books on architecture. There was an architectural retrospective at the RIBA Heinz Gallery in 1999. Lived in London and at Ampthill, Bedfordshire.
