Painter and teacher, born in Abertridwr, Glamorgan, son of a miner. He attended Cardiff College of Art, 1962–4, Slade School of Fine Art, 1964–7, and Reading University for a postgraduate course, 1968–70. Gomer Lewis and Frank Auerbach were influential teachers. Taught Liverpool College of Art, 1971–4. He was later a part-time lecturer at Gwynedd Foundation Course. In 1970 Prendergast moved to Bethesda, the North Wales village most like a mining village in South Wales, near the huge Penrhyn Slate Quarry. He painted a long series of craggy, colourful quarry panoramas, as shown in WAC’s The Dark Hills, The Heavy Clouds show of 1981. Prendergast showed at Royal National Eisteddfod, SWG and SEA and had solo exhibitions at Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool, 1973; WAC, Cardiff, 1975; The Road to Bethesda, Mostyn Art Gallery, Llandudno, and tour, 1983; and Paintings from Wales, National Museum of Wales at Penarth, and tour, 1993–4.
