Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres are for anyone who has been affected by cancer. Maggie’s is about empowering people to live with, through and beyond cancer by bringing together professional help, communities of support and building design to create exceptional centres for cancer care. We have a collection of over 1,000 drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures. The collection boasts some pieces by key British artists such as Grayson Perry, Eduardo Paolozzi and Anthony Gormley. This collection is spread across the fifteen Maggie’s centres throughout the UK. Maggie’s Swansea opened in December 2011, the 9th Maggie’s Centre in the UK since our first centre opened in Edinburgh in 1995. The building was designed by the late Kisho Kurokawa in 2007 and was completed by architects Garber and James. The centre, in the grounds of Singleton Hospital was conceived as a concrete spiral revolving around a central kitchen. Maggie’s works very hard to incorporate art in our centres that will work with the architecture and landscape and help create a safe and comfortable environment for those affected by cancer. Some key pieces of Maggie’s small but significant art collection are displayed in Maggie’s Swansea. Works by artists such as the late Welsh artist Peter Prendergast whose family donated the work to the centre in 2011. As well as a significant painting collection, Maggie’s Swansea also has a range of prints and drawings.
