Sculptor, painter and teacher, born in Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. He was educated at Derby College of Technology, gaining an engineering degree in 1941 that led him to the tool design office at Rolls-Royce. Studied at Derby College of Art, 1943–5, then Slade School of Fine Art, 1945–8. His teachers included A H Gerrard, Randolph Schwabe and for ceramics Heber Mathews. Won a prize for stone-carving. Part-time lecturing in art at Lonsdale College of Higher Education, Derby, and University of Nottingham allowed Pope to handle many architectural commissions in the Midlands. In 1966 he was commissioned by Basil Spence for a figure of St Catherine on a church in Sheffield, other commissions including a large abstract sculpture for Cathedral of All Saints, Derby, and a wall relief in the entrance to the Museum and Art Gallery: Family of Man.
