Painter, full name Arlie Panting, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in America, who married an Englishman and worked for the last 30 years of her life in Somerset, although she had studios in London and New York. Arlie trained at Milwaukee’s State Teachers’ Training College (later the University of Wisconsin) and the Layton School of Art, also L’Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. Her ethereal figurative paintings were influenced by the Italian Renaissance and School of Paris. Arlie commonly used bright colours and soft, blurred outlines, but she was a constant experimenter with surface techniques. Was a member of the Free Painters and Sculptors and showed in many London galleries, including the Portal and John Whibley, there having a series of solo exhibitions.
