Portrait and landscape painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Belfast, he studied art at Belfast Municipal School of Art, 1912–17. Exhibited widely, including RHA, Fine Art Society, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts as well as in New York, Brussels and Belfast. His work is in several collections in Ireland, America and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Lived at Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. His eldest son, Frank (1925–1979), who sometimes used his mother’s unmarried name Murphy, was also an artist.
