Sculptor and teacher, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1930–5, with Alexander Carrick, then from 1936–8 in Copenhagen, Athens and Florence. Became master of sculpture at Newcastle University. As well as exhibiting at RSA, SSA and widely in the provinces, McCheyne completed a number of ecclesiastical commissions. Lived in Gosforth, Northumberland. Laing Art Gallery has McCheyne’s Family Group, 1959, in the manner of Henry Moore.
