Lucy Jones (b.1955)

Painter, printmaker and teacher, born and lived in London. She studied at Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, 1975–7, Camberwell School of Art, 1977–9, and Royal College of Art, 1979–82, a Rome Scholarship in painting taking her to British School in Rome, 1982–4. By then she had begun to collect a number of awards and prizes, including the Cubitt Award for Painting, 1980, Anstruther Award for Painting, 1982, Oppenheim–John Downes Memorial Trust, 1986, RA Summer Exhibition Daler-Rowney Award for the best work in oil, 1989, and prize, John Moores Exhibition, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 1995. Taught extensively from mid-1980s, latterly being a tutor at Slade School of Fine Art, 1992–9. Jones overcame the problems of cerebral palsy to paint her disarming self-portraits and views of London, with an exuberance and rich, singing colour.
