Painter, draughtsman, writer and teacher, born in Hove, Sussex, but brought up in London. He attended Slade School of Fine Art, 1963–7. From 1980–1 Hyman was visiting professor at University of Baroda, India; in 1983–4 was artist-in-residence at Lincoln Cathedral; the following year occupied a similar position at London University’s Westfield College. From 1987–8 Hyman worked in Ahmedabad, India. Later awards included a Wingate Foundation Award, 1998. Hyman wrote on a wide number of topics for magazines and other publications, including William Blake, John Cowper Powys, R B Kitaj and James Ensor. His own work was strongly autobiographical, tinged with humour, with an Expressionist distortion. In 1979 Hyman mounted the controversial show Narrative Paintings at Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol, which toured.
