Painter in the European Expressionist tradition, born in Hungary. He gained his diploma in painting at the Academy of Fine Art, Budapest, in 1953, but during the Hungarian uprising against the Communists three years later fled to England. Despite lack of good English he found work and in 1964 moved to Wakefield, Yorkshire, to take up post at College of Art. Eventually took early retirement to paint. Noted for sombre figure paintings in which the images are isolated and distorted. Showed widely, including National Portrait Gallery. Work in public and private collections in Britain, on the continent, in America and Australia. National Portrait Gallery and Hart Gallery held retrospectives in 1995. Gordon’s last major work was a group portrait of the Lindsay Quartet, commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in 2003.
