Joseph Gibbs was born in Bromsgrove, Warwickshire, England in 1849 [1]. His occupation was given as artist in the 1881 England and Wales census, however, it is not known where or with whom he received his art training.
Between 1891 and 1906 he exhibited 16 works at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
His address was given as 25 Howard Street, Harbourne, Staffordshire in 1881; and St. Paul's Road, Smithwick, Staffordshire in 1889 and 1921. He was a member of the Midlands Arts Club.

[1] His year of birth is given as 1849 by ART UK, however, the 1881 England and Wales census gives his age as 30, which suggests that he may have been born a little later.
