Painter, printmaker, draughtsman and writer, born in London. After the Slade School of Fine Art under Alphonse Legros, Emanuel worked under W A Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, Paris. From the late 1880s he began to show at the RA and Paris Salon, also exhibiting NEAC, ROI, RI and many other galleries. Emanuel had a varied career, travelling widely in Europe, Africa and Ceylon; being chief examiner for the Royal Drawing Society; publishing art criticism and topographical drawings in the Manchester Guardian and Architectural Review; and teaching etching at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1918–30. Was a keen collector of watercolours. Wrote a number of books, including Etching and Etchings, 1930. In his writings Emanuel opposed new trends in art.
