Westminster City Council holds a fascinating collection of paintings which are held at the City of Westminster Archives Centre or on display in other Council buildings. Please note that there is restricted access to a number of these other locations. There are paintings of individual buildings such as theatres and churches, as well as topographical views of parks, canal and river scenes from the past three centuries, including several paintings documenting Westminster during the Second World War. There are also portraits of Mayors of Westminster and of the former Boroughs of Paddington and St Marylebone. Items of particular note are a series of eight small fifteenth-century paintings titled 'The Little Martyrdoms', and a portrait of the British philosopher, political economist and civil servant John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) by George Frederic Watts (1817–1904), a copy of which is in the National Portrait Gallery.
