Painter and draughtsman, born near York as Daphne Gribble, the daughter of a civil engineer. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1927, among her teachers George Charlton, whom she married in 1929. They spent their honeymoon at the Mill House, Tidmarsh, home of the writer Lytton Strachey, the artist Dora Carrington and her husband Ralph Partridge. The Charltons settled in Hampstead, north London, but the quiet and gentle romantic Charlton was unequal to the sexual demands of the vibrant, attractive Daphne. Her conquests included Stanley Spencer, whose fine portrait of her is in the Tate Gallery collection.
