Artist working in a variety of materials to make realistic objects; painter, teacher and curator. He was born in Mottingham, Kent. Studied at South Shields Art School, 1948–9. After attending Edinburgh University, 1951–4, and the College of Art, 1954–9, he gained an Andrew Grant Scholarship which took him to the British School in Rome. First solo show at 57 Gallery, in Edinburgh, in 1963, becoming its director, 1966–9. By this time Callender was well established as a constructor of objects. They could be boats or part of boats, made from paper, card or balsa-wood and realistically painted. Callender had a number of solo shows, later ones including Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery, 1994, and Northlands Festival, invited artist, Helmsdale and Thurso, 1997.
