Artist in sculpture and metalwork, born in Stirlingshire. She studied at Glasgow School of Art to gain a first-class honours degree in sculpture, 1979–83, then did an advanced sculpture course at St Martin’s School of Art, 1983–5, teachers including Alan Gouk, Tim Scott and Katherine Gili. Became a member of British Artist Blacksmiths’ Association and the Scottish Society of Artist Craftspeople. In 1985–6 Bennie was resident at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop, travelled in America and Canada, 1986–7, then began full-time as an artist blacksmith/sculptor in 1988. She won the RSA Benno Schotz Prize in 1987. Exhibitions included New Generation Artists at Compass Gallery, Glasgow, 1983; Scottish Drawing Biennial, Paisley Art Gallery, 1985; RSA from 1986; Scottish Sculpture Now, Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1989; Steel and Wood at Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, 1991; and The Bonhoga Gallery, Shetland, 1994.
