Penlee House Gallery & Museum is the only Cornish public gallery specialising in the historic art of west Cornwall, including the world-famous Newlyn School artists (c.1880–c.1930), such as Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley, Frank Bramley and Harold Harvey, together with the work of their St Ives contemporaries. The permanent collection of paintings comprises around 750 pictures, including works on long-term loan from Newlyn Art Gallery and from private collections. The collection is actively being developed through donations, bequests and purchases with the assistance of grant aid bodies. Some of the best-known works include 'The Rain it Raineth Every Day' by Norman Garstin, 'School is Out' by Elizabeth Forbes and 'Eyes and No Eyes' by Frank Bramley. Set in an elegant Victorian house and park, the Gallery & Museum was refurbished in 1997 to provide a modern gallery space capable of accepting loans from national and regional collections. Since then, it has built an international reputation for its year-round programme of exhibitions, usually featuring the Newlyn School and Lamorna group (c.1880–c.1930), which offer the unique opportunity of viewing such major works a stone’s throw from where they were created. Please note that there is no permanent display and the galleries may be closed between exhibitions: check the website for details before travelling. Penlee House is an award-winning tourist attraction and offers intriguing displays of social history and archaeology, an excellent café and well-stocked shop.
