More about

Littlehampton Museum's collection of fine art has been built up ever since its inaugaration in 1928. Most of the oil paintings have a connection to Littlehampton, and the majority are painted by artists from the town, and represent local scenes or themes. There are several paintings within the collection with great local importance. Leslie Wilcox's painting shows passengers boarding the 'Worthing Belle', a cross channel ferry steamer, in the 1880s but was actually painted in 1966. A. Plant's painting of the esplanade on East Beach in the 1870s provides a fascinating insight into how the famous beach front used to look, as well as highlighting features which no longer exist, such as the Beach Hotel, and the Green before it was levelled by local unemployed workmen, hired by the then Duke of Norfolk.
