Comunn Eachdraidh Nis was constituted in 1977 as the first Comunn Eachdraidh (Historical Society) in the Western Isles and covers the area from the Butt to Ballantrushal. Situated in the village of North Dell in Ness on the Isle of Lewis, Comunn Eachdraidh Nis is housed in the former Cross School around twenty-five miles from Stornoway. As well as artwork, the society also houses an extensive display of artefacts, including the iconic Ronan Cross, photographs, croft histories, sound and video recordings in Gaelic and English and extracts from other published material.
The art collection is mainly focused on local people and culture with paintings having been donated or loaned over the past thirty five years by local families. Part of the collection is on permanent display but we are happy to accommodate viewings of other artwork by arrangement.
