The Charles Dickens Museum, London is situated at 48 Doughty Street in the house where Charles Dickens (1812–1870) lived between 1837 and 1839. This historic house captures the spirit of Dickens at a time when his writing was rapidly propelling him to great heights. The collection of oil paintings in the museum comprises mainly portraits of Dickens and his family, and also paintings of scenes or characters from his books. Probably the most famous painting is 'Dickens’s Dream' by Robert William Buss. Dickens’s love of performing can also be seen in the two portraits by Robert Hannah of Dickens giving his public readings. They depict him standing behind the reading desk he designed himself for this purpose, reading aloud from his works. The museum has recently undertakn a ‘Great Expectations’ building project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
