Brooklands Museum is located on 30 acres of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit which opened in 1907. The Museum not only tells the story of the birthplace of British motorsport but also the site’s key role in British aviation, from A. V. Roe’s first flight in 1908 to the design and production of Concorde in the 1970s. An important part of the collections and displays that depict this history is the many paintings, drawings and prints acquired by the Museum. They feature the machines and personalities that brought the track to life, including the aircraft flown by the many Brooklands flying clubs or built by Vickers, Sopwith, Hawker, British Aircraft Corporation and British Aerospace. The paintings held in the Collection are as varied as they are numerous, artists having been inspired by so many aspects of life at Brooklands. Racing on the Outer Circuit appears frequently as a motoring subject with the first flight of prototype aircraft being particularly popular with aviation artists.
