(b Rotterdam, c.1601; d Weesp, Mar. 1653). Dutch painter, mainly of marine subjects, active in Rotterdam, Delft, and Amsterdam. One of the outstanding marine painters of his period, he moved from stormy subjects in the manner of Porcellis to serene and majestic images that influenced van de Cappelle (who owned a large collection of his work) and Willem van de Velde the Younger (whom he taught).
