Midlothian Council is the local government body for the area of Midlothian to the south of Edinburgh. Until 1975, Midlothian occupied a much larger area than today, roughly a horseshoe of land around Edinburgh, but changes in local government have greatly reduced Midlothian’s size. Over the years, the Council has acquired some paintings and artworks which currently are displayed in various council buildings or are held in storage. There are many amateur artists living in Midlothian and at times the council has purchased their work, especially if it has a local theme. In addition, some artwork has been donated to the council. Midlothian Council does not run an art gallery or museum, but does encourage local artists to display their work in local libraries by organising regular exhibitions.
