This week's episode of BBC One's 'The Big Painting Challenge' sees the contestants taking a trip to the seaside to hone their skills painting seascapes and landscapes. It features works by Constable, Turner and Frederic Edwin Church.

Calais Sands at Low Water: Poissards Collecting Bait

Paintings depicting boats and the sea are one of the most tagged subjects on Art UK as found in this investigation by the BBC, and there are plenty of landscapes too. Over on Art Detective we have a Maritime Subjects group specifically dedicated to solving some maritime mysteries.

Some of those that have already been resolved through contributions from Art Detectives include:

Successfully locating where this shipwreck took place. The exact location of the wreck, and the name of the artist, were identified
This stormy lighthouse scene being newly attributed to Jean-Louis Petit
Figuring out that this painting depicts Dordrecht in the Netherlands
Realising that this landscape was not, as previously thought, a Constable, but a Wainewright
