Laura Cumming has been art critic of The Observer since 1999. She is the author of four books, including The Vanishing Man: In Pursuit of Velazquez, which won the James Tait Black Prize for Biography; a memoir of her mother, On Chapel Sands, which was a Sunday Times bestseller, shortlisted for the Costa, Rathbones Folio and Baillie Gifford Prizes; and Thunderclap: On Art and Life and Sudden Death, shortlisted for The Writer’s Prize (previously The Rathbones Folio Prize). She lives in London with her husband and twin daughters.
