A set of Curations developed to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The War Artists' Advisory Committee (WAAC) was established within the Ministry of Information at the outbreak of the Second World War. Headed by Sir Kenneth Clark, its aim was to compile a artistic record of Britain throughout the war and Britain at war in theatres of war. 6,000 paintings and works on paper were acquired from over 400 artists, and a selection of these, mainly paintings, are included in these Curations. After the war these were distributed to museums and institutions in Britain and around the world. Artist(s) covered: Stephen Bone before Normandy. Conceived by and co-researched with Julia Beaumont-Jones, Curator, RAF Museum.

Artists featured in this Curation: Stephen Bone (1904–1958)

  • Royal Air Force Duty Boats and Naval Rescue Launches at Stornoway: A Motor Drifter on Its Way to the Fishing Grounds

    (LD3109)

In 1942 Stephen's brother, Gavin Bone, died. Following this Stephen's father, Muirhead Bone decided not to continue with his own WAAC commission with the Admiralty, and Stephen took over the role in June 1943. For the best part of a year he painted a large number of canvases of naval craft, convoys, harbours and life on ships at locations around Britain, including Stornoway, Lismore and Oban Bay.
