The sculpture was offered to Westminster Council by the Plazzotta Estate on the condition that the council bore all expenses of erection, lighting, maintenance and insurance. The dancer is depicted seated on a stool, with her left foot resting just above her bent right knee. Her right foot is pointed into the ground and her hands are lightly resting on her left leg. Her hair is tied back in a bun and she is wearing a flimsy dress and ballet shoes. Throughout his career, Plazzotta explored the theme of dance. He started in 1967, inspired by Royal Ballet dancer Nadia Nerina, and continued with several other sculptures of Rudolf Nureyev, which were widely acclaimed. He also made two studies of Vanessa Redgrave in her role as Isadora Duncan. 'Young Dancer' was put forward by Westminster’s Planning and Transportation Department as a part of a scenic project to transform the west end of Broad Court.
