Louis-Ernest Barrias's statue, known as ‘Young Mozart’, was one of his most popular pieces, enjoying wide commercial circulation. Its popularity is a testament to the resurgence of interest in the music and romantic life-story of Mozart in the nineteenth century.

Barrias studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, was the winner of the 1864 Prix de Rome and contributed to the sculptural decoration of the Paris Opéra. His works include much public statuary and embrace allegorical, biblical and historical figures.
