'Summer Panorama' was bought in 1958 on the suggestion of Zbigniew Pelczynski who, as a student, had visited galleries on behalf of the Junior Common Room (JCR) and also proposed the purchase of our Patrick Heron painting. It was restored in 2009. 'Winter Panorama' was bought in 2009. The very different frames are both original. They were painted as proposals for a pair of unexecuted murals for the hall at Morley College, London. Born in 1922 and dying in 2009, the artist lived latterly mainly in Crete. Often described as a neo-romantic, he preferred to describe his work as Arcadian. For over 60 years he was a prominent figure in a wide circle of contemporary artists and also expatriates and travellers to Greece, including Lucian Freud (with whom he shared a studio), Graham Sutherland (a major influence), John Piper and Patrick Leigh Fermor (whose book covers he illustrated).
