Neil Dallas Brown studied at Dundee College of Art before returning to teach there and in the 1990s was a familiar figure on the staff of the Glasgow School of Art. His work from the 1970s often exudes a sense of threat, of pending brutality and sexual confrontation, inspired in part by the sectarian troubles engulfing Northern Ireland. By the 1990s his work had changed considerably. Gone were the menacing images from his 'Ulster Paintings' to be replaced by a gentler iconography, albeit tinged with a degree of uncertainty.
