The statue is placed in a pinnacled niche above the door in the church tower. The image is based on an engraving of William Wallace that was in the possession of the Society of Antiquaries. Wallace is shown clad in classical armour and a Celtic helmet, a sword with a Highland-style targ (cloak) over one shoulder pinned on his breast with a Celtic annular brooch. This early work was instrumental in starting Forrest's career as a sculptor.
