The radical and lawyer William Shaen was a student at the University of London, studying classics at UCL and graduating in 1840, before turning to the study of law at Edinburgh University. In London, he served as Clerk to Convocation from its inception in 1858 and helped to found Bedford College. The sculpture is signed and dated and is on a black marble plinth.
