William Courtenay, was a key figure in Exeter and earned the unofficial title of the 'good earl' for his involvement in local charities. As well as being an MP for South Devon, he also became president of the Poor Law Board as well as a peer in the House of Lords. The statue was removed from its original location in Bedford Circus in 2005 when Princesshay was being redeveloped. After being restored, it was moved to its new location at Northernhay Gardens in 2010.
