William IV is depicted in the Admiral of the Fleet's full-dress uniform. It was William IV who granted the University of London its first charter (1836). The work is in a 10" (25.4 cm) ornate gilt gesso frame. It was donated by 7th Earl of Beauchamp, Chancellor of the University of London 1929–1931. Beauchamp resigned as Chancellor in a hurry at the same time as he resigned all other public offices, after his brother-in-law the Duke of Westminster exposed him for having homosexual tastes.
